Sažetak
The development of renewable energy sources (i.e. sun, wind, biomass, geo-thermal energy) represents the primary goal of the European Union energetic policy and an important task for the Republic of Croatia. The renewable energy sources carry the important role in the restrain of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses emission, the equally important goal on the levels of the European Union, Croatia, and its regions and towns. Energy represents the relevant part of the tourism management, with its needs growing due to the large number of tourists and to the growing standards within particular tourist objects. The growing need is also noticed to upgrade energetic efficiency because of local and global environmental impacts due to energy consumption within particular objects. Therefore the restructuring of the already existing and the building of new objects according to the EU directives and international agreements on environment and energy is necessary. Encouraging the use of renewable energy sources can become both economic and energetic stimulus for tourism, either for hotels and camps or for other tourist subjects, as the additional needs can be easily followed by the right amount of a particular form of renewable energy, i.e. the capacities can be used optimally. As only few other European countries, Republic of Croatia disposes of ideal conditions in solar energy use, expressed in a large number of solar days and in energy allocated to its latitude. In spite of this, solar energy is not applied enough within the Croatian tourist objects. The most common reasons for poor solar energy consumption lay in non-encouraging surroundings, poor knowledge of technology, and in the belief of non-efficiency of such investments. From their functional aspects, tourist complex energetic systems fully respond to the expressed needs. However, if their economic or ecological aspects are analyzed, the modern tourist complex energetic systems are not satisfactory. Precisely because of this, possibilities offered by renewable energy sources which could satisfy technical-energetic, ecological, and economic effects have been researched within the study. If the hotel industry decides on following new market needs and trends, on attracting eco-aware tourists, and on investing into new technology in order to implement renewable energy sources, the whole tourist destination should benefit from such positive hotel image. Every hotel investments should represent the result of a particular investment policy, representing the part of the development policy of the tourist destination as a whole. The increased share of renewable energy sources enhances the overall destination sustainability and contributes to the security of energy provision in times of growing dependence on import and insecure energy prices. Renewable sources can in particular cases be economically competitive even now, with their full competitiveness with fossil energy sources expected soon. Renewable energy sources represent particular complex areas of human activity, and they, because of particularities and various factors determining possibilities and modes of use, require a multi-disciplinary approach and co-operation of various professions and scientific disciplines.
