Sažetak
The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of smoking intensity and duration on blood carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO), methemoglobin (MetHb), oxyhemoglobin (HbO2), total hemoglobin (tHb) and oxygen saturation (SaO2) levels as well as their mutual correlations. The study included total of 263 persons, 142 smokers and 121 non- smokers of both genders with mean age of 40.7 and 46.2 years, respectively. Venous blood samples were collected in the morning at the Clinical Hospital Osijek. Concentrations of hemoglobin derivatives were recorded using Radiometer OSM3 Hemoximeter by light absorption measurements at six different wavelengths. In smokers, HbCO level was 95.6% higher (P<0.001) compared to non- smokers, while other measured parameters did not differ. Male smokers had higher tHb, HbCO and SaO2 compared to female smokers who displayed higher HbO2 level compared to male smokers. A high positive correlation could be shown between the smoking intensity (defined by daily number of smoked cigarettes) and HbCO levels (P<0.001) and negative correlation of smoking intensity and HbO2 level (P<0.02). Statistically significant increase in HbCO levels (60% in males and 78% in females, P<0.001) was proved even with relatively low smoking intensity (10–19 cigarettes per day). Also, negative correlation was found between COHb and HbO2 levels for both genders (P<0.001 in male and P<0.024 in female smokers). No influence of smoking internship on measured parameters could be demonstrated.
