Sažetak
Introduction. Anticipation is a phenomenon that was described in the mid-20th century and has long been investigated in various diseases. In psychiatry, it is most frequently described in schizophrenia as well as in bipolar affective disorder (BAD). The anticipation is an earlier onset of the disease in people with positive heredity than in people with negative heredity. Hypothesis: Both schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder have earlier onset in pople with positive heredity. Aim. The aim of this study was to determine whether the phenomenon of anticipation in schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder was confirmed during a 3-year period in patients hospitalized at University Department of General and Forensic Psychiatry and Clinical Psychophysiology, Vrapce Psychiatric Hospital. Subjects. The subjects included in the study have been previously described. The subjects were all schizoaffective patients hospitalized at Department on whom reliable data on the existence or nonexistence of positive heredity of any diagnostic schizophrenic spectrum (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, persistent delusional disorder, bipolar disorder and non specified psychosis) could be obtained. Methods. The phenomenon of anticipation has been described in Croatian and foreign literature. We found no such a study on schizoaffective disorder. All hospitalized schizoaffective patients were investigated in the same manner. The sample of schizoaffective patients was smaller than that of schizophrenic patients. Results. The study in both schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients has shown the presence of the phenomenon of anticipation, i.e. an earlier onset of the disease in patients with positive heredity.
