Sažetak
We investigated Pleistocene terrestrial sediments in the surroundings of Ilok Croatia, within the framework of a bilateral scientific project between the Croatian Geological Survey and the Hungarian Geological Institute (“Correlation of the loess sections of SW Transdanubia and Slavonia”) during 2009.. After logging a number of loess profiles in the vicinity of Sarengrad and Ilok we found a sand pit in the northern part of Ilok, in which at least 12 m alluvial sand was cropped out, covered by marshy sediments and brown forest type palaeosol. At first sight it was supposed to be a Pliocene alluvial sand which is quite common in Hungary. Later on the lateral continuation of this series was found in the brickyard of Ilok in the southern part of the village. Here the alluvial sand is partly interfingered and covered the marshy sediments which upward gradually change into infusion loess and loess. The loess covered by laminated alluvial silty clay dips 12° towards ENE then upward succeeds the horizontal part of the same material. This series is continued laterally by brow forest type palaeosol which is truncated erosionally by forest steppe type palaeosol. Finally, the whole sequence is covered by typical loess with forest steppe and chernozem-like palaeosols. The tilting of the laminated silty clay, loess and marshy sediments indicates local tectonic activity of the area. Based on the brown forest and forest steppe type paleosols in the lateral continuation of the sequence its possible age is Middle Pleistocene.. The investigated loess horizons could be correlated with the Old- and Young loess series of the Paks Loess Formation, the alluvial sand of Ilok resembles to the Middle-Upper Pleistocene Marcali Sand Formation of the South Transdanubian Hills.
