Sažetak
During 2008, as part of the Research, Reconstruction and Revitalisation of the Cultural Heritage of Ilok-Vukovar- Vučedol project supported by the Croatian government and the Council of Europe Development Bank, archaeological excavations were conducted in Ilok, at sites Ilok – Castle of the Dukes of Ilok – St. Peter the Apostle Church. The research was conducted by the Institute of Archaeology from Zagreb. In this final year of the project, archaeological excavations focused on the research of those elements defined by the explicit instruction from the Ministry of Culture, in which the resumption of the excavations was required at the entrance object of the Castle of the Dukes of Ilok, which had already been partially researched in the autumn of 2007. At the position of St. Peter the Apostle Church, excavations of four places were required in order to, as far as complex communal infrastructure allowed, define the southern part of the Gothic church plan, a s well as to establish if there was any architecture along the present-day elementary school building, which could present an obstacle in the preparation of the future fittings relocation. During the rescue archaeological excavations conducted in 2007 on the area in front of the eastern facade of the Odescalchi Castle, Gothic walls SU 3634, SU 3655, SU 3685 and buttress on wall 3657 were discovered. Based on the conservators’ research of the Odescalchi Castle conducted until the year 2001, which defined that the entrance to the medieval palace of Nikola Iločki had been on the eastern, least threatened, side, and had consisted of several objects (Horvat, 2002), it was established that the Gothic walls discovered during the mentioned archaeological excavations formed integral elements of the entrance defensive object. The 14, 62m extension of the SU 3634 and SU 3655 walls were discovered in 2008, which defined the total length of the entrance defensive complex to 22, 97 m. At the position of the Gothic Church of St. Peter the Apostle, 4 probes were opened. The first and fourth probe were set along the northern facade of the elementary school building, but no traces of the Gothic architecture were found, only the archaeological layers that needed further research along the whole trench of the future fittings, in case they get relocated. As expected, the second and third probes contained the Gothic architecture, i.e. walls of the church. A part of the Gothic apse was found in the second probe – its southern part with a supporting buttress. They were built together, of broken stone and white-gray plaster. The southern part of the western facade wall of the church was found in the third probe, along with the southern part of the bell-tower with supporting buttress. The bell-tower had been located in the centre of the western facade of the church and it had had two supporting buttress. The bell- tower and church were built together in such a way that their front was built of regularly laid brick while their interior was filled with broken brick, stone and white-grey plaster. In the end of the research, following the given instructions, both sites were covered with geotextile and buried with sand and clean soil.
