Sažetak
Croatia has long tradition in cultivation of marine waters. The culture of flat oysters started 300 years ago in Malostonski Bay, and in 1936, the oysters from Maliston Bay were granted for quality with gold medal at World Exhibition in London, UK. The shellfish culture was diversified by introduction of Mediterranean mussel in 1960-ies. The culture of marine fish, mainly sea bass and gilthead sea beam started in 1980-ies with a building of one of the first industrial marine hatcheries in Zadar. In the late 1990-ies tuna fattening emerged in Croatia, as one of the first commercial trials in the Mediterranean. However, the story of Croatian mariculture is story of lost opportunities. Although ; one of the pioneers in business, coastline with a number of potential culture sites, developed scientific and technological support and enormous tourist market, the Croatian production today is insignificant in European relations. The present production is around 4000 tons of shellfish (mainly mussels and around 100 tons of flat oysters), 4000 tons of sea bass and sea bream and 5000 tons of tuna. Only three marine hatcheries, one bigger and two smaller are presently operational- but most of the juveniles are imported from EU. Although Governmental developing plans launched in the 2000 predicted growth to 20000 tons of shellfish an 10000 tons of white fish per year, but the production remained similar for the last ten years. However, future of the Croatian mariculture in the light of the EU accession is not bright. It is obvious that major growth in the production of marine fish is not reliable due to overproduction in EU, lack of available inshore rearing sites and complex concession bureaucracy procedure ; while capture based tuna culture is near ban on EU level due to over-fishing species situation. The development of shellfish culture is slow due to its family based nature and lack of significant investment in the sector in the last 15-years and continuous ban on export to EU. The mariculture sector in general is in the process of transformation and still not competitive to be a significant player on EU level. However, strong tourist market offer possibilities in production of ecological and organic seafood served fresh daily, where smaller companies could develop niche markets.
