Sažetak
Contamination of groundwater, surface water and waste water by heavy metals is not only an ecological problem of particular countries but also a global problem. Elevated arsenic concentrations in water may be also due to the geological composition of soil, and arsenic toxicity and carcinogenicity have a strong impact on the overall ecological system and on human health. Different adsorbents are used to bind arsenic ions and one of them is natural zeolite material which, alone or in combination with the so far applied standard methods of nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and ion exchange, has an efficient effect on reduction of the concentration of arsenic ions. Natural zeolite-clinoptilolite is a hydratized alumosilicate material and cation exchanger ; however, its negatively charged surface can be efficiently modified for removal of apolar and anionic contaminants. Structural investigations have shown that arsenic is bound on the zeolite surface in the form of stable arsenic complexes – iron oxyhydroxides, along with an irreversible desorption process. The paper investigates the kinetics of arsenic ion binding to MINZ filters under certain conditions of pH, T, presence of competing ions (sulphates, phosphates) and concentration of arsenic ions in solutions. The amount of adsorbed iron ions in the process of its modification to natural clinoptilolite was determined as well. Iron modified natural zeoliteclinoptilolite (MINZ) was shown to be efficient material for removal of arsenic ions from water.
