Sažetak
The Gorjak Creek, situated near Zagreb, Croatia (Fig. 1), is a small freshwater system, which receives high amounts of industrial wastewaters from baker’s yeast and pharmaceuticals production facilities. The aim of this study was to investigate chemical composition of hazardous organic compounds and their toxic potential in sediment samples from the Gorjak Creek. Chemical characterization of the fractionated extracts was achieved, employing a combination of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC/Q-ToF). The same extracts were subjected to toxicity screening in a series of small scale or in vitro bioassays designed to characterize the biological response of hazardous contaminants with different modes of action. The possible effects of contaminants semi- quantitatively determined in the sediment samples are discussed in relation to the determined ecotoxicological potential.
