Sažetak
Mental health monitoring, as well as risk and protective factors and needs assessment of children and youth is not developed well in Croatia. Epidemiological data is inconsistent, in fragments, and can’t be a good basis for effective and science-based prevention. Therefore, within the project of „Communities that Care - development, implementation and evaluation of the model of prevention of behavioural disorders in community” which is being conducted in collaboration of the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Region of Istria, Croatia, lots of work is being done on the adaptation and construction of the Croatian version of Survey for children and youth which is taken over from Hawkins and Catalano (2002). Application of the survey as a need assessment instrument provides epidemiological data and specific profiles of risk and protective factors of community in which the instrument was applied. Regarding the fact that American version of the questionnaire is not fully applicable to Croatian conditions because of its length, long application, cultural differences and specificity in risk and protective factors, we wanted to construct the Croatian version of the survey which reclines to American tradition but takes Croatian specifics into account. Final goal of this research was the construction of the practical and relatively quick tool which could be implemented for assessing the needs of various communities in Croatia. For that purposes, translated American version of the survey was implemented on 1125 participants, 492 students of elementary and 633 students of high school. Survey was completed by pupils from 6th and 8th grade of elementary school and 2nd and 4th grade of high school. Research was conducted on the area of the city of Zagreb where survey was piloted as well as on the area of the Region of Istria (towns Pula, Poreč, Labin and Buje). After the adequate number of participants was collected regarding the number of variables, survey was submitted to factor analysis. This paper will besides development of Croatian version of the instrument, present the results for two other Croatian cities – Split and Cakovec. Results will be shown in profiles of risk and protective factors for the year 2010. Special attention will be given to externalizing and internalizing disorders.
