INTRODUCTION: There is still no exact data on the relationship between the level of overweight and obesity and also physical activity on the one hand, and the seriousness and prognosis of the acute coronary syndrome, on the other. METHODS: In this pilot study the authors collected data on 200 patients who had suffered from acute coronary syndrome (STEMI, NSTEMI, unstable angina pectoris) and were hospitalized in the Coronary Care Unit, University Hospital “Sestre milosrdnice”, Zagreb, Croatia. Overweight and the obesity level were measured using different anthropometric parameters (body weight, body mass, waist circumference and hip circumference) and indexes (body mass index, waist to hip ratio). Physical activity was estimated using Baecke and LRC PA (Lipid Research Clinics Physical Activity) questionnaires. The seriousness of the acute coronary syndrome was estimated using the cardioselective markers value, ECG changes, echocardiography and coronarography findings, early and late complications, the number of days of hospitalization in CCU, and also the general and cardiovascular in-hospital mortality. Prognosis of the acute coronary syndrome was estimated using general and cardiovascular mortality, the appearance and CCS level of angina pectoris, the reinfarction and reocclusion rate, the necesity for rehospitalization, PCI or ACBG after first hospitalization. RESULTS: The authors show that level of overweight and obesity as well as of physical activity can be brought into connection with the different aspects of the seriousness of the acute coronary syndrome and its prognosis. The values of anthropometric parameters and indexes were mostly inversely and the values of physical activity level were mostly directly proportional with indicators of seriousness and prognosis of the acute coronary syndrome. CONCLUSION: The lower is level of overweight and obesity and the higher is level of physical activity in patients with acute coronary syndrome, the better is outcame of their disease.
