Sažetak
Ever faster technological development has made railway the basic transportation means in urban and suburban traffic. Big traffic flows, high frequency on certain lines, but also the possibility of transporting a great number of passengers have brought railway in that domain of of traffic into the position of a carrier without competition. Realising all the advantages a railway can offer, even its competition, i.e. air carriers, have requested co-operation from their competitor. The reason for this is that railway can provide fast and safe connections between airports and city centres, which has become impossible for road transport due to growing congestion on the roadas of big cities. In another field there is again increasing competition going on between railway and air carriers for passenger transportation at distances ranging from 400 to 800 km, where railway is becoming competitive through its high-speed tracks, with trains using tilting technology. Competitiveness of railway in relation to air traffic is obvious and it is not reflected only in the transportation price and ecologically friendlier solution of transport but also in the speed which already brings railway neck and neck with air transport.
