Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to explore Russian and Western Balkan economies in the context of the global recession. The recent global economic crisis had a strong negative impact on the analyzed economies. Due to persistent external imbalances and risk aversion of global investors, Western Balkan countries were not able to implement expansionary fiscal policies to compensate for the drop in external demand. On the other hand, the global recession has a strong negative impact on Russian exports. In all observed countries the global economic crisis resulted in decreasing comparative advantages and export competitiveness in most export products. The recovery of the total demand in the EU during 2009 had a positive influence on export growth of the analyzed countries, especially of Russia. In the observed period 2000-2009 the trade intensity level among WB countries was relatively high. WB countries increased trade shares with other WB countries and Russia and at the same time reduced their shares with the EU 15. The most progress in trade with Russia, on the export side, was achieved by Albania and on the import side by Serbia
