Sažetak
A routine sampling of dairy cows in Croatia on the sixth clay after calving is carried out to determine ketone bodies in urine. This is not entirely appropriate as by this time as gluconeogenesis will have been stimulated Investigations were therefore directed at detecting the time that an energy deficit occurred and initiated gluconeogenesis in 42 Friesian cows. A decrease in blood sugar concentration was observed on the fifth day after calving. In all cows with a blood sugar concentration of 1.66 mmol/l or lower ketone bodies were detected in the urine on the following clay. The conclusion was that daily examination of blood glucose during the first week after calving are necessary to detect the time that energy deficit occurs.
