Sažetak
A standard test method for barium activity number determination needs a couple of days work. This long process includes scouring procedure, drying, equilibrating samples to room conditions and approximately two hours for process adsorption of Ba(OH)2 in the glass stoppered flask that requires frequent shaking followed by titration of Ba(OH)2 with 0.1 mole/ dm3 HCl.
The aim of this paper was to determine adsorption isotherms of Ba(OH)2 on cotton yarn of different mercerization degrees. For this purpose cotton yarns (16/2 ply) were mercerized without and under tension in NaOH solutions to which anionic surfactant was added. Unmercerized and mercerized cotton yarns were then treated in Ba(OH)2 solutions at constant temperature and under controlled shaking. From the adsorption data isotherms were determined. This was carried out by measuring the concentration change of Ba(OH)2 as a function of time, until the equilibrium condition was reached. The shape of adsorption isotherms enables us to draw conclusions regarding development of the method for barium number which can be shorter and easier to carry out than a standard one.
