Sažetak
Purpose - The changes in Croatian health care system in previous decade included establishment of private health care offices in primary health care. For physicians in private sector, that means working at the market, and asks from them intensive engagement in financial, fiscal and other issues. To help physicians in successful management of their offices, we designed and established educative program in accounting, book-keeping, fiscal and financial management of private offices, provided by layers, economists, health managers, pharmaceutical experts etc. Design/methodology/approach - This prospective longitudinal case-control study included 47 physicians in private primary health care offices that underwent educative program in management (group 1) and 47 physicians that did not attend that program. We followed their financial outcomes and business from 2004-2009 in several categories: inspection/control issue, accounting/book-keeping and income/profit/new investment generated. Findings: Group 1 has significantly smaller number of violation of law regulative compared to group 2. Educated physicians (group 1) has created 2-2.5 times higher income than group 2, and also 3x more investment to their educations, business, and extension of services. Educated physicians also created more than 30% of reduction in material expenses compared to group 2 physicians that did not participate in education for management program. Research limitation/implication – In program offered to physicians we promote entrepreneurship education in primary health care, and as the final outcome we achieved successful offices that better serve our patients. Practical implication – This study confirms necessity for business education on health care provider in order to successfully lead their offices Originality/value - This study demonstrates that innovative approach to entrepreneurship in terms of providing education to physicians in economic management of health care office is crucial in positive financial results of medical practitioners’ offices.
