Sažetak
The main contribution to the electron-phonon coupling in ionic metals with strongly correlated electrons is attributed to the deformation-induced variation of the crystal field on those ionic sites which are involved in conduction. In layered-metal oxides the latter are assumed to be the oxygen sites of the CuO/sub 2/ planes. The coupling of the holes on those sites to a representative deformation mode in lanthanum compounds is evaluated using the point charge approximation and the Ewald method. Particular attention is devoted to the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal instability and to the formation of the corresponding polarons in the presence of a small number of holes. The stability of such polarons is discussed in detail.
