Sažetak
Polarons are associated with the soft orthorhombic to tetragonal deformation coupled to holes. The coupling arises from the deformation induced variations of the crystal field on the oxygen and copper sites in the conducting CuO/sub 2/ plane. The first of two considered limits assumes large U/sub d/ on Cu sites, large Cu-O charge transfer energy Delta /sub pd/ and takes the slow holes on oxygen sites as noninteracting. In this case polaron dimensions are determined by the strong coupling of the oxygen hole to the tilted lattice. In the second limit Delta /sub pd/ is assumed small. This problem is approached from the weak coupling side, assuming that the direct electron-electron interactions dominate over the coupling to the lattice. The most important interband processes which describe the Cu-O fluctuations are selected. The hole localization is the result of the interplay of various interactions, Umklapp in particular. In this limit the localized hole may locally destabilize the tilted lattice.
