Sažetak
Extremely high sea levels in the North Adriatic are studied through 17 years of hourly data at Bakar. Four major contributions to the maxima are examined: (i) tides, (ii) storm surges and seiches caused by synoptic and smaller-scale meteorological disturbances, (iii) slower variations induced by planetary atmospheric waves, and (iv) seasonal processes. It is shown that planetary meteorological disturbances support long lasting floods, which operationally are much more demanding than isolated extremes. Effects of expected global sea-level rise are also analysed; it is found that the higher mean sea level would not only increase the frequency but would also result in manifold lengthening of floods.
