Sažetak
The Mediterranean is still the leading tourism region in Europe. Traditionally, a half of the international tourist flows within Europe is realised in the Mediterranean basin. In 1998, Europe received 382 million of visitors. Of this, 48% (or 182 million) were realised in the countries in the Mediterranean region. The Mediterranean's share has slightly decreased in European international tourist arrivals from 1987 when it was the highest in two decades period (54%). Visitors to the Mediterranean spent US$ 109 billion or 47% of total tourism receipts in Europe, which were US$ 230 bn in 1998. Tourism industry is more important for economies of the Mediterranean countries, than for other parts of Europe - average tourism receipt per capita in the Mediterranean Europe is about US$ 425, while in the rest of Europe it is US$ 255. Likewise, the average share of tourism receipts in GNP in the Mediterranean region is higher (3,1%) than in other parts of Europe (1,9%). Of total hotel capacity in Europe (12 million beds in hotels and similar establishments) half is in the Mediterranean countries (5 million beds). Tourism functionality ratio in Mediterranean region accounts for 21 beds per thousand inhabitants. It is higher than in other parts of Europe where it accounts for about 13 beds per thousand inhabitants. Average occupancy rate of H&S capacity is about 36% yearly. Of the total number of tourist overnight stay in the Mediterranean region (707 million), half (377 million) is realised by international tourists. Italy, Spain and France are the leading receptive tourism destinations in the Mediterranean basin. They absorb more than a half of total nights spent in the Mediterranean region. The most important tourism generating markets are Germany and United Kingdom. Together, these two countries account for more than half (52% or 195 million) of the total number of nights spent in the Mediterranean region by the international visitors. Two Mediterranean countries - Italy and France are also important as emitive markets, as they account for further 10% (39 million) of the total number of nights spent in the region. Belgium and Netherlands generate 32 million of nights for the Mediterranean region or 8% of inbound tourism flows. Not all countries in the Mediterranean region are equal dependent on these six generating markets. However, four fifths of visitors to Spain, Italy, Malta and Greece originate from these emitive markets, while their share in other countries is lower.
