Sažetak
The paper analyses socioeconomic position of persons with disabilities in a society. First part discusses social exclusion, i.e. poverty, and examines poverty and social exclusion of persons with disability in the world and European context. Authors use latest European research in comparing socio-economic position of persons with disabilities with that of the other citizens. Finally, guided by a limited research of this phenomenon, the authors will discuss position of the persons with disabilities in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Next part offers analysis of the research conducted in Croatia in 2009. The research titled “Social position of persons with disability in Croatia” was conducted on 689 respondents by the Ministry of family, war veterans and intergenerational solidarity in cooperation with the Faculty of law and the Centre of social work in Zagreb. The research was carried out in 28 randomly selected centers of social care in Croatia, with 25 persons interviewed in each centre. This research used a questionnaire developed for the prior research on “Families of persons with disabilities” and a scale related to social support and violence. Some of the questions were constructed solely for the purposes of this research. The paper uses the results of several variables referring to the socio-economic status of the respondents, their working status, employment, and their receiving of any form of social benefits in hope of providing answers to the question of social exclusion and poverty of persons with disability. Based on the analysis of the results, we hope to gain an insight into fundamental rights of persons with disability who live in poverty and social exclusion, so they could live in dignity and take on an active role in the society. We also hope to inspire the promotion of common and individual responsibility in the fight against poverty and social exclusion, and to encourage determination in all public and private participants. The results of this paper have a concrete application – by proposing solid measures for the fight against poverty and social exclusion of persons with disabilities, we hope to reaffirm concrete steps of enrolment of civil society and the network of support of local communities.
