Sažetak
Using two different settlement examples from one island (Croatian island called Pag) I hope to conclude what reasons led to success of one and failure of another planned settlement. I choose these two examples because they are quite rare examples of planned and organised settlement foundation on Croatian islands. Also both examples have existing detailed documentation which allows me to reconstruct the context and phases of building and settling. The first example, settlement called Gajac, was planned at the end of 1980s in order to fulfill the growing demands for tourists’ accommodation. The second example goes back in 1939. Because of the malaria disease, government decided to move the whole village called Kolan next to sea. Totally new village was planned, new streets and modern water and waste management systems were made. The land for houses was planned and divided, but no house was ever built and the plans failed. Why?
