Sažetak
Purpose: The aim of this research was to analyse of six-month outcome of stroke in Eastern Croatia. Method: The research included 161 patients of both sexes who had their first acute stroke and were treated in Clinical Hospital Osijek, Clinic of Neurology. The youngest patient was a 35-year-old woman and the oldest one was a 98-year-old woman, while the mean age was 72.43. Barthel index (BI) was used to assess functional deficiency. The first assessment was carried out in acute phase of the disease, and control assessments were carried out at one, three and 6 months after the stroke in patients´ homes. Results: Mean Barthel index score was higher at every successive measurement: 55 in first measurement, 80 in second, 95 in third and 95 in fourth measurement. All BI items were statistically significant (P < 0.001) apart from dressing and bowel control. BI score indicated greater dependence in women. BI measurements showed difference in level of dependence according to patients´ sex in all measurements apart from the third one (P = 0.111). Regarding the stroke type the highest difference was in the item transfer (P = 0.009). This significant difference between measurements in BI was confirmed (Friedman, P < 0.001). There was high correlation between BI items (Spearman). Conclusions: Patients´ functional abilities are continuously improving during the first 3 months after the stroke and there was no significant improvement in the following 3 months.
