Sažetak
Introduction: Tobacco smoking has been associated with a negative oral health outcome. Initially, at the start of tobacco smoking habit salivary flow and pH may be increased. Long termed smokers have lower salivary flow and higher saliva pH than nonsmokers. Tobacco smoking and increased calcium concentrations in saliva are associated with periodontal disease. Quantitative changes in the chemical composition of the saliva of patients with smoking habit could be of significance on the early diagnosis and progression of periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of tobacco smoking on salivary calcium, salivary flow rate and saliva pH in young people. Subjects and Methods: The study included 8 young healthy students who have smoked 10 to 20 tobacco cigarettes per day, for longer than 5 years and 8 age and sex matched control healthy non-smoking students (mean age 23.8±1.3, range 22-26 years). Unstimulated saliva samples were collected during 5 minutes into preweighted sterile plastic cups. Salivary flow was determined and pH was immediately measured by pH-meter. Salivary calcium was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: Salivary flow and calcium concentrations in unstimulated saliva of tobacco smokers were higher when compared to non-smokers, but without statistically significant differences (p=0.09). Subjects with higher salivary flow had significantly higher salivary pH (r=0.52). Subjects with higher salivary pH had significantly lower salivary calcium concentration (r=-0.56). Conclusion: These results suggest that moderate smoking of tobacco cigarettes in young healthy subjects may not have a significant impact on salivary flow, salivary pH or calcium concentrations in unstimulated saliva.
