Sažetak
The NA61/SHINE physics program is motivated by the NA49 observation of the onset of deconfinement in central Pb+Pb collisions at the low SPS energies and possible indications of the critical point of strongly interacting matter which lattice QCD calculations locate at energies accessible at the SPS. Relevant NA49 results will be reviewed. The NA61/SHINE experiment, at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) facility, is based on an extensive upgrade of the NA49 detector. The experiment aims to search systematically for the critical point of strongly interacting matter and study in detail the properties of the onset of deconfinement. The physics goals of NA61 will be pursued by performing a two-dimensional scan in (T - mu_B) of the phase diagram by varying collision energy (10A-158A GeV) and size of the colliding systems (p+p, p+Pb, B+C, Ar+Ca, Xe+La). The status and plans of the NA61 experiment in the coming years will be summarised.
