Sažetak
Thanks to the development of digital electronic computers, a great number of algorithms favourable to the wide application of quantitative methods, have been developed in the recent few years. In practical experience, however, the application of these methods is far below their possibilities. The aim of the paper is to illustrate the possibility of applying selected quantitative methods in the process of planning the port system. In regard to the complexiti of port activities, the selection has been the problem of unloading cargo from ships onto berths by means of different ways of cargo handling. The optimal solution of the problem has been obtained by means of the aplication of two models: tha model of determining the optimal number of berths and the model of the optimal plan of cargo transhipment. In order to construct the mathematical models statistical method have been used, and to obtain the optimal solution of the model, methods of operations research have been used, i.e. liner programming, and the theory of queuing lines. The models have been tested on the numerical example. The value of the models shown is in the possibility of the change and completion of the models in order to adapt them to real situations.
