Sažetak
Chemical constituents of Nephthea mollis, a soft coral frequently found in tropical coral reefs (1), were investigated. N. mollis was collected in the Egyptian coastal area of the Red Sea. Upon drying, the collected specimens were extracted with dichloromethane/methanol and the obtained crude extract was fractionated by several chromatographic techniques (VLC, MPLC, HPLC) to yield a number of pure metabolites. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by means of spectroscopic methods (1D and 2D NMR, MS), as well as by comparison with spectroscopic data of known compounds. The majority of the isolated metabolites are lipophilic compounds bearing long unbranched chains. Among the isolated compounds were acyl- (1) and alkyl- (2, 3) derivatives of glycerol, ceramides (4, 5), carotenoids (6), (Fig. 1) and others. The results of the investigation indicated that N. mollis is a rich source of secondary metabolites. Their biological activity is currently being investigated.
