Sažetak
Purpose. To evaluate the safety and efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) in reconstructing the ocular surface.
Methods. Amniotic membranes were obtained from fresh placenta after elective caesarean. Preparation and storage was made according to Tissue Bank International Protocol in Lions Croatian Eye Bank. AMT was performed in 42 eyes in a period between 1998-1999. Indications for surgery were: Group A: persistent corneal ulcer (unresponsive to all previous treatment, n=12), Group B: symptomatic bullous keratopathy (n=10), Group C: ocular combustion with symblepharon formation (AMT was preceded by keratoplasty, n=3), group D: recurrent pterygia (n=5), group E) corneal epithelium defects (n=12)
Results. A) Healing of the corneal ulcer was recorded in 50% of eyes and significant reduction in ocular inflammation in 100%, B) 100% of eyes became asymptomatic, C) corneal graft remained clear and epithelialized and eye motility was satisfactory, D) prevention of pterygium regrowth in 70% of eyes, group E) reepithelisation in 70% of eyes.
Conclusion. Amniotic membrane transplantation has shown to be efficacious in selected cases of corneal disorders. Eyes that underwent AMT showed reduced inflammation and vascularization, thus enhancing the success of ocular surface reconstruction.
