Sažetak
A computational model has been developed to determine wind characteristics in the wake of a model of a rectangular building. Results of simulations have been compared with previous field-test results. The width of the recirculation zone behind the building has been determined using Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations for two different wind incidence angles, i.e. for wind normal to the long building side and for wind normal to the short building side. The model of the building was exposed to the rural atmospheric boundary layer flow characterized by the power law exponent alpha = 0.11 and corresponding turbulence intensity according to the Engineering Sciences Data Unit (ESDU) data sheets at the inlet of the computational domain, where ESDU represents a compilation of previous full-scale measurements. In the present simulations, the mean velocity profile in the empty domain at the position of the building corresponds to the atmospheric boundary flow characterized by alpha = 0.12 due to a minor modification of flow characteristics along the computational domain. In a configuration with the short building side exposed to the oncoming wind, the recirculation zone is approximately 20% wider than the building. The recirculation zone in a configuration with the long building side exposed normal to the wind is approximately equal to the building width. Differences in width of the recirculation zone are probably due to different characteristics of the separated shear layers in the two tested configurations. In general, numerical results presented in this paper proved to be in good agreement with recorded full-scale results. This means that the approach taken in this study can be successfully applied in calculating the width of recirculation zone in the wake of a rectangular building for rural type terrain.
