Sažetak
Morphological awareness (MA) is defined as the ability of a speaker to manipulate morphological structure of the words. Wang et al. (2006) differs four aspects of morphological awareness: identification, discrimination, interpretation and manipulation, while Casalis and Louis-Alexandre (2000) claim that MA concerns manipulation of bases, as well as affixes, prefixes or suffixes, which could be derivational or inflectional. Hence, MA influences both morphological and lexical acquisition in L and L2. Although Croatian is morphologically rich language, MA was not in the focus of any systematic research yet. This paper deals with the ability of Croatian L2 speakers to retrieve derived words and the features of suffixes that influence that ability. There were chosen nine suffixes that differ in their frequency, productivity, semantic transparency, polysemy, abstractness of meaning. The suffixes also differ regarding the gender they will assign to a derived word. It will be discussed how any of the listed features effect the word retrieving.
