Sažetak
Global crisis and recession have a strong influence on all economics activities, and hence also tourism. The main problem of the economic and political crisis in Croatia arises from several important causes: economic crises in generating tourism countries that are the main market of Croatian tourism, far too large indebtedness of Croatia and impossibility of getting new loans and investments, inadequate tax system in tourism, poor structure of accommodation capacities, distinct seasonality of Croatian tourism, etc. All of these, as well as many other causes, influence the insufficient competitiveness of Croatian tourism and also the low economic efficiency of companies operating in tourism. In this paper the main indicators of Croatian tourism in the period from 2000 to 2009 will be analyzed. These indicators address the state and development of Croatian tourism, as well as the most important issues of Croatian tourism today, especially in the period of economic crisis and recession. Also, present measures and instrument of tourism policy will be critically analyzed. The basic hypothesis of this paper is that it is not possible to create a strategy either for recovering from the recession or for a long-term development of Croatian tourism by using short-term measures of economic policy. The purpose of this research is to suggest the guidelines that would help define a long-term strategy for the development of Croatian tourism.
