Sažetak
Organic sheep breeding in Croatia is currently mostly based on indigenous breeds, which are well adapted to their environment and furthermore feature a natural resistance to common parasites. Nearly 50% of the Croatian territory can be classified as karst areas, most of which are situated in the Mediterranean region. These areas can be called “virgin soils”, since they have never been polluted by industrial, intensive agricultural or livestock production. Eight out of nine Croatian indigenous sheep breeds are located in these areas. At the moment, Croatia has around 10 organic flocks, approx. 2000 sheep and 1700 lambs produced yearly, with 5 of them being located in the karst areas. According to the newly prepared National program for development of organic sheep production in Croatia, a 10% share in the total sheep production in karst areas is aimed. As a first visionare scientist in Croatia, prof. Miljenko Šimpraga started in 2004 the research project “Eco lamb production in Croatia” with the support of the Faculty of veterinary medicine, Zagreb and the Croatian Ministry of science and education. In the course of four years, a team of veterinary experts monitored housing conditions, feeding regime and general health status of animals from five organic flocks. Upon completition of the project in 2008., physiological standards for health monitoring of indigenous Croatian sheep breeds especially in organic production have been elaborated. The development of organic livestock production in the karst areas of Croatia should accelerate the economic growth of this undeveloped region, while preserving the traditional way of life and protecting it’s biodiversity. Stricter production/rearing standards in compliance with the EU regulations will assure high-quality organic products ready to be offered both in the local and international market.
