Sažetak
Virginia Woolf is well known as one of the most important writers of the Modernist Movement. Her style and literary technique differ to a great extent from those of the writers of previous generation. Literary devices she uses in her fiction are characteristic for the whole new set of modern writers like Joyce, Proust, James and Kafka. But these changes in literature didn't happen at once, but are a result of a gradual process of development characteristic for all domains of human activity. To understand why Virginia Woolf wrote as she did, one must be familiar with numerous changes that took place at the beginning of the 20th century. Development of science, art and literature are interrelated and affect one another enormously with one discovery leading to another and reflecting itself in art and literature. The writers were exposed to the new technologies and discoveries and incorporated them in their fiction. To understand this new kind of writing one has to be familiar with the social and historical factors that affected it
