Sažetak
Competition for the space in the coastal area has become one of the most important factors determining sustainability of marine aquaculture. An effort to integrate marine aquaculture into coastal management plan has been exersized in Croatia as to contribute to the improvement in selection, protection and allocation of sites for existing and future aquaculture development. Following the political decision being taken and an administrative framework being created the environmental site suitability criterias for sustainable aquaculture development were identified. A“Guideline” formulated procedures for aquaculture planning and integration aiming to release development potentials for aquaculture while reducing negative impact on environment. Physical plans were developed for the County of Zadar and suitability of individual zones for variety of marine aquaculture (finfish, tuna farming, shellfish) were determined on the ICZM principles. Data on zone characteristics, species, technology, approximate capacity, etc, were made available to decision makers. It is hoped that such an integrative approach in site selection for marine aquaculture will be interesting to other Mediterranean countries, and at the same time facilitate a wide range of investment opportunities for local, national and international investors, respectively
