Sažetak
In recent years, legislations worldwide have been developed in order to address ecological quality or integrity, within estuarine and coastal systems. Based on the concept that ecosystem health is mainly linked to the condition of biological communities, phytoplankton is used as biological quality parameter. In accordance with the Water Framework Directive (WFD), phytoplankton biomass, composition, abundance and blooms frequency were analyzed in three Bays with different physicochemical characteristic along the Croatian coast. Phytoplankton indices composed of the frequency of elevated Chl-a records, frequency of high phytoplankton counts and frequency of high counts of any individual taxa showed significant correlation with other phytoplankton indices composed of chlorophyll a values, nutrients concentration and oxygen saturation. Ecological status of transitional and coastal water was assessed as deviation from values obtained for referent stations characterized by weak anthropogenic influence. Differences in phytoplankton community between different areas were discussed considering different trophic states and proposal for some indicator species are given as well.
