Sažetak
The local government of Dubrovnik-Neretva County is responsible for environmental protection and management with natural resources in the total area of 8.353 km2. Of the total, the most area comprises sea and the coastal zone (6.568 km2), including south Adriatic islands and the peninsula of Peljesac. Dealing with needs of sustainable development and limits for competitive activities, often there are problems where to give more attention and enable peoples investment into new projects. The problem is especially high in highly valuable natural resources such as protected areas, especially natural reserves or even natural parks. Such example exists in the case of the Bay of Mali Ston that is special reserve in the sea. By centuries, oyster cultivation as well as limited fisheries gave local people resources for their living. Nowadays, the Bay becomes the focus of politician and possible capitalists for tourist investment projects. Political issue deals with the fact that the Bay is split between two countries: Croatia and Bosnia and Hercegovina. And environmental issue deals with plans for investments into urbanisation and building of hotels that could endanger sensitive sea ecosystem. Appropriate management of the Bay of Mali Ston aquatic ecosystem would make possible co-existence of future development plans.
