Sažetak
In this paper, the authors explore the role and importance of rural identity in the rural tourism product. Rural identity consists of many elements such as food, clothing, entertainment, celebrations, the way in which residential and farm buildings are built and furnished, and house lots and villages in the rural environment are maintained. According to the authors, the rural tourism product is unacceptable and lacks competitiveness, because rural identity, as a vital factor in designing a rural tourism product, is neglected. To verify this hypothesis, the authors set out to explore rural identity and its role and importance in the example of rural tourism products of Istria, a region that has achieved a high level of rural tourism development in Croatia.
