Sažetak
Globalization and the spread of English as a lingua franca (ELF) have a strong impact on EFL motivation research. English learners' sense of membership in a non-specific global community of English users diminishes the relevance of their attitudes to native speakers and cultures. The sociocultural loading of English as a global language may be regarded as the affective basis of EFL motivation. Our pilot research study combines sociolinguistic and socio-psychological perspectives to investigate the structure of EFL motivation and the underlying attitudes. 390 students of business (157 males, 233 females ; average age 21.5 years ; average length of English learning 9 years) were administered a questionnaire on attitudes to English (33 statements assessed on a Likert-type scale) and EFL motivation (50 statements assessed on a Likert-type scale). The questionnaire section on attitudes was adopted from research by Erling. The motivation section included items from Mihaljević Djigunović and Dörnyei et al. All items were adjusted to fit our research design and objectives. Data on the role of English in students' lives and demographic data were collected using open-ended questions. The data obtained was submitted to factor analysis and content analysis. Factor analysis revealed five distinct subsets of attitudes to English: attitudes to (AF1) English as a threat to respondent's cultural and linguistic identity, (AF2) English as a must for all Europeans, (AF3) Croatian in relation to English, attitudes to (AF4) the national norms of English, and (AF5) to culturally unmarked, neutral variants. The PCA of motivation variables yielded a four factor solution which could be related to Dörnyei's L2 motivational self system: (MF1) traditional integrative motivation (MF2) instrumental-communicative motivation, (MF3) the learning experience and (MF4) self-confidence. The moderately positive correlations between AF2 and MF1 ( , 581**) and AF2 and MF2 ( , 488**) were the strongest correlations revealed.
