Sažetak
The genus Lavandula is an important member of the Lamiaceae family, subfamily Nepetoideae, comprising a total of 39 species, 30 infraspecific taxa and 17 hybrid species which are widely distributed from Canary Islands across the Mediterranean countries to India. Considering the large morphological and chemical diversity, the subgeneric classification of 8 sections and 3 subgenera has been adopted. Section Lavandula (subgenera Lavandula) is economically the most important, containing two principal taxa, L. angustifolia (common lavender) and the hybrid L. x intermedia (lavandin), which are widely cultivated for the production of essential oils used in perfumery, cosmetics and aromatherapy products. In spite of the taxonomic significance of trichomes as well as the economic value of their secreted material, any comprehensive study on the morphology and organographic distribution of Lavandula trichomes has not been conducted yet. As a part of our extensive research on the Croatian indigenous cultivar of lavandin named 'Budrovka', the aim of the present study was to investigate the structure and distribution of glandular and non-glandular trichomes by scanning electron microscopy, while histochemical techniques were used to characterize the nature of trichome contents. Three distinct classes of trichomes (glandular peltate and glandular capitate as well as non-glandular trichomes) were found to be present on the surface of L. x intermedia 'Budrovka'. Variability in the occurrence of each kind of trichomes on different plant organs (leaf, flower and inflorescence stalk) was observed. Particularly, long stalked capitate trichomes were reported as the exclusive type found on the inner surface of corolla and histochemical tests characterized the secreted material of this newly described trichome, containing both, essential oil and phenolic compounds. New insights into the trichome micromorphology given here for the first time present a valuable contribution on the genus Lavandula.
