Sažetak
In this lecture I want to discus types and influences of travel on the life and careers of the members of the higher nobility of the medieval Kingdom of Slavonia in the 13th and 14th century. It is important to underline that in the Middle Ages the territory of the modern state of Croatia was divided in three separate but well connected kingdoms: Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia. The main goal that I have in mind it this lecture is the mobility of the nobility of the medieval Kingdom of Slavonia. I want to research this mobility by discussing several issues connected with the travelling of higher nobility in the Middle Ages. I want to search for the reasons of their travels. Were these travels conducted on personal reason? How many of these journeys were actually a military service? How many of this travels were connected with the political or any other reasons? How often did the average member of the higher nobility of Slavonia travel? How far did he go? Did he travel alone, or he had a company? How big was his company? These are the questions I want to discus in this paper. Probably the best way to answer to these questions is through the example of one nobleman of that time. So I decided to do my research on case study on the journeys of the lord John Babonić. I think that he is a good example for the members of higher nobility because he was rather influenced nobleman with the reach political and military career. The other reason for choosing his life for a case study is fact that John Babonić was rather frequently mentioned in preserved charters and narratives from the late 13th and beginning of 14th century.
