Sažetak
Moltkia petraea (Tratt.) Griseb. is an endemic Illyric–Balkan species. In Croatia it grows in Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean regions (1). The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities as well as the content of phenols, flavonoids and phenolic acids in water extracts of leaves, flowers and stems of M. petraea from two mountainous localities (Sveti Jure and Sniježnica). A further goal was to evaluate the influence of the growing location on the antioxidant activity and the quantity of phenolic substances. In general, extracts from Sniježnica contained more phenolic substances than extracts from Sveti Jure. UPLC–MS/MS analysis showed that caffeic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid were the most abundant free phenolic acid in flower and leaf extracts, respectively. With few exceptions, significantly smaller quantities of glycosidically bound phenolic acids then the corresponding free forms were found. DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power and chelating activity of the extracts were moderate but increased with extract concentration. On the other hand, activity of the extracts from Sniježnica in -carotene-linoleic acid assay did not differ from the activity of standard, butylated hydroxyanisole. In general, the extracts from Sniježnica were more effective antioxidants than the corresponding extracts from Sveti Jure. The water extracts of M. petraea did not show antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi tested in the diffusion and dilution assays.
