Sažetak
Experiments were done to investigate whether the differences in abundances between concrete and sandstone seawalls of the two grazing limpets, Patelloida latisrigata and Siphonaria denticulata are due to the physical nature of the substratum, changes in food supply or because of inter- and intra-specific competitive interactions. Concrete and sandstone plates were attached to intertidal seawalls in two locations in Sydney Harbour. P. latisrigata and S. denticulata were added to plates as single species or in combination, with densities similar to those on natural walls in the vicinity. We tested specific hypotheses about survival, recruitment and grazing of these two limpets. Results indicated that survival of P. latisrigata and S. denticulata was significantly greater on concrete compared to sandstone, although our prediction was that survival of S. denticulata would be greater on sandstone. Survival of P. latistrigata did not differ among treatments. Survival of S. denticulata differed among treatments being less in the presence of P. latistrigata. Grazing of P. latisrigata was significantly greater on lower part of sandstone compared to concrete plates, but no significant differences were found between sandstone and concrete on the upper parts of plates. Understanding how fundamental ecological processes of intertidal species may differ between seawalls and natural shores is essential for managing intertidal biodiversity in urbanized environments.
