Sažetak
Chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus (Houttuyn, 1782), is a widely distributed cosmopolitan pelagic fish species, commercially important in the Adriatic Sea. A total of 4157 individuals of the species caught in the eastern mid-Adriatic Sea during the period from January 1998 to December 2007 were analysed. Fork length of all analysed individuals ranged from 10.1 to 39.0 cm (mean 23.8 ± 4, 678 cm), whereas males were between 17.9 and 38.8 cm (mean 26.0 ± 3.829 cm) and females were between 14.9 and 39.0 cm (mean 25.3 ± 3.450 cm). Fifty per cent of the total chub mackerel population became mature at 23.3 cm, males at 21.8 cm and females at 25.0 cm of fork length. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) and stages of gonadal variations show that this species spawns from April to July, with the peak in June. The histological analysis of gonads was done on 100 specimens. It confirmed the accuracy of gonadal stages and gonadosomatic index assessment. The mean number of eggs produced by females during spawning season was 181277±62090 and ranged from 99166 to 394120 eggs per female.
