Sažetak
Garfish, Belone belone (L. 1761), is an epipelagic and commercially important migratory species widely distributed in the north eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Sea. In the Adriatic Sea this species is found mainly in the offshore areas, but migrates towards coastal waters during the spawning period. A total of 2776 individuals of garfish caught in the area of the eastern mid-Adriatic Sea during the period from December 2003 to December 2008 were analysed by sex. The total length (TL) of all observed specimens ranged from 27.0 to 75.5 cm, the mean value was 38.3 ± 7.94 cm. Fifty per cent of garfish population became mature at 28.5 cm of total length. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) variations show that this species spawns from January to May, with the peak in April and May. The histological analysis of gonads was done on 100 specimens and confirmed the sexual reproduction pattern of garfish male and female specimens obtained by macroscopic analysis of gonads and gonadosomatic index variations. Total number of eggs per rip ovary ranged from 7908 to 49949 and increased with length in accordance with the equation: F=189, 76LT1, 337(r2=0, 768).
