Sažetak
Cities as complex formations are the result of particular natural conditions and human activities. They arise, spread and develop ; their structures and functions change, depending on the development of socio-political and economic relations, and of the systems in which they appear. The goal of this paper is to show that a large event can be used as a stimulus for the successful functional and structural transformation of part of a city matrix and for its integration in the wider city area. Furthermore, studying and analysing spatial resources, giving them value, and carefully selecting development scenarios are the basis for sustainable urban development. This paper deals with the example of the City of Lisbon, which hosted in the late 1990s EXPO’98 under the jurisdiction of the Bureau International des Expositions. The EXPO’98 project was considered from the beginning as an initiator for the urban rehabilitation of the degraded eastern industrial coastal zone of Lisbon. In the paper, the author analyses the dynamic aspects of the functional and structural transformation of the subject area based on three characteristic periods: the pre-exhibition, exhibition and post-exhibition periods, in the context of sustainable urban development.
