Sažetak
Distillation is the most widely used separation technique in the chemical process industries. However, not all liquid mixtures can be separated by ordinary fractional distillation. When the components to be separated have relative volatilities of close to 1.00 (i.e. close boiling mixture), separation becomes difficult and expensive because a large number of trays and a high reflux ratio is necessary. If the mixture forms azeotropes, a different problem arises - the azeotropic composition can limit the separation. In such a case, the azeotrope must be “broken” to enable the separation. Extractive distillation is an available separation process for azeotropic mixtures. The process requires the addition of an entrainer that modifies the relative volatility of the components. The appropriate selection of this material is very important to ensure an effective and economical design and operation of the extractive distillation process. Ionic liquids (ILs) are new “designer solvents” with favourable properties [1]: they have low melting point, suitable viscosity, stability up to high temperature, high solubility for both polar and non-polar organic and inorganic substances, very low vapour pressure. Beside the former mentioned properties they are non-flammable and not toxic. Recently, ILs have attracted considerable attention for their potential use as entrainers for separation of azeotropic or close boiling mixtures. They have a relevant advantage over conventional extractive solvents due to their low or negligible vapour pressure, volatilities and thermal stabilities. There are four kind of entrainers used in extractive distillation [2]: solid salts, liquid solvents, the mixture of liquid solvents and ionic liquids. Organic solvents and dissolved salts are both suitable entrainers, but extractive distillation with a liquid phase entrainer is more widely used in industrial applications. However, ILs combine both advantages of liquid solvents and solid salts and they are suitable entrainers for the extractive distillation process. In the course of our work the application possibilities of ILs in extractive distillation process in laboratory scale were studied for the separation of i-amyl-acetate/i-amyl-alcohol binary mixture. Two kind of ILs were examined: [emim]tosy and [bmim]Cl types. The initial composition of the mixture was adjusted to ~16 m/m % i-amyl-acetate and ~84 m/m % i-amyl-alcohol. After the extractive distillation process the amount of i-amyl-acetate reached 29.9 and 57.7 m/m % in the case of [emim]tosy and [bmim]Cl type ionic liquid, respectively. These results indicate that the structure and composition of the applied ionic liquid is a very important parameter and the amount of ILs has a definitive effect on the effectivity of extractive distillation separation process. Based on these results investigations of other type of ILs are planned. [1] van Rantwijk F., Sheldon R.A., Chem Rev, 2007, 107: 2757-2785.
