Sažetak
Enhanced neuronal activity during epileptic discharge increases the concentration of the free fatty acids (FFAs) in the brain (1). This biochemical disorder is caused by the increase of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration, the activation of membrane phospholipases C and A2 and by degradation of membrane phospholipids. FFAs have detrimental effects on cell membranes. Accumulation of their metabolites causes further intracellular brain damage (2). The aim of this was to investigate accumulation pattern of the brain FFAs in rats with experimentally induced epilepsy. One group of animals received electroconvulsive shock (ECS), while the other group received pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) injection. Both groups developed tonic-clonic generalised seizures. The rats were decapitated 3 min after ECS and 5 min after PTZ administration. FFAs were quantified using gas chromatography, method. The results demonstrate different brain FFA accumulation pattern in mentioned experimental models. ECS was accompanied with the accumulation of the brain free palmitic, stearic, oleic and. arachidonic acid ; while PTZ-induced seizures caused the accumulation of the brain free oleic, arachidonic and docosahexaenic acid.
