Sažetak
INTRODUCTION In recent years substantial attention has been focused on children relationships to motivation for exercise. Those relationship became important and emphasized in past years because of the growth of obesity and recognized health-enhancing effects of exercise. Many studies revealed participation motives for exercise including fun, social aspects, and skill development (Biddle, 1998). METHODS The aim of present study was to establish relations between motivational constructs and social facilitation like: perceptions of peer, parent, and teacher support, perceived value and meaningfulness, perceived competence, and some fitness indicators. Forty eight children aged 10 were involved in study. Children were measured with 5 anthropometric tests (height, weight, 3 skinfold), 6 motor tests and in half mile endurance run. Daigle (2003) questionnaire of participation in physical activities was applied. Questionnaire is composed from 52 items grouped into 8 subscales. Three subscales were related to perceptions of parental, peer and teacher support, one was related to perceived value and meaningfulness, gender appropriateness, perceived competence, engagement in PE and intention to be active. Children responded on 5 point Likert scale (strongly disagree to strongly agree). Results for scales were summarized and descriptive and correlational statistics were calculated. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Diferencess between boys and girls were not established nor in anthropometry neither in motor tests. Cronbach Alpha was rather low for most of the scales in questionnaire except for the peer support (.84). Motor test results were quite comparable with local norms for that particular age (Findak, 1996). According to data from subscales of motivation questionnaire children were somewhat restrained. It seems that children perceive and appreciate perception of family support and intent to engage in PE the least (mean results of 9.08 and 9.16 out of possible 25). Children also relatively low valued peer support (12.84), perceived competence (12.96) and gender appropriateness of curriculum (12.36). Children valued somewhat higher teacher support (14.48), while the influences of perceived value and meaningfulness (23.16) and intent to engage in physical education activities (18.32) were highest. Except intercorrelations in subsets of variables no significant correlations of motor and motivation variables were not found. Lack of parental and peer support in children engagement in physical activities is worrying and some steps should be taken to reinforce that relations and to draw attention to significance of children participation in sports and exercise. PE practitioners should emphasize self-confidence, self-awareness and overall positive experience of participating in sport. Focus shouldn’t be on outcomes (winning or losing) but on performance and effort.
