Sažetak
The book presents a collection of important biotransformations which are carried out mainly on an industrial scale. An extensive index classified by substrates, products, substance classes, enzymes and companies provides a direct access to each process organized in the order of enzyme classes. The reader will find all significant parameters describing the biotransformation itself and the process. The data describing each process are arranged in a convenient format and are accompanied by key literature citations. As far as flow sheets of the processes are available, these are given reduced to their significant elements. Many people affiliated with the design of new chemicals in industry are not aware of the potential given by enzymatic and microbial transformations. By planning strategies leading to new products scientists have to get sensibilized to consider the involvement of biotransformation steps. It has to be pointed out that the usage of these biological catalysts results in high selectivities, a reduced amount of side products, convenient reaction conditions and layout. The catalysts can be degraded in the environment without causing any harm. In the last decade the need for less polluting synthesis has increased continuously.
