Sažetak
Burr parsley (Caucalis platycarpos L.) has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of certain types of tumor. Phenolic compounds, including phenolic acids and flavonoids, and polysaccharides are considered to be the major bioactive compounds in C. platycarpos. The aim of this work was to evaluate antioxidant activities and total phenolic acids content of plant extracts obtained with different solvents. Aboveground parts of C. platycarpos were extracted with methanol, ethanol, dichloromethane and water at room temperature for 14 hours. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by using four spectrophotometric assays. Non-specific hydrogen atom donating activity was determined by diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The ability of extracts to act as effective hydroxyl radical scavenging agents was assessed in the deoxyribose degradation assay. As the antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity depends on the metal chelating and reducing ability, the extracts were tested for the chelating activity on ferrous (Fe2+) ions and were determined the total reducing power (expressed as Ascorbic Acid Equivalents – AscAE in μmol per g of dry extract), by the method that includes reduction of potassium ferricyanide. Ethanolic and metanolic extracts were the most abundant in total phenolic acids content containing 103.44 mg of chlorogenic acid per g of dry extract, and 80.40 mg of chlorogenic acid per g of dry extract, respectively. Methanolic and ethanolic extracts were the most effective in DPPH assay with IC50 42.6 μg mL-1 and 61.9 μg mL-1, respectively. Ethanolic extract showed the highest hydroxyl radical scavenging activity in deoxyribose degradation assay (IC50 5.2 μg mL-1) and the highest reducing power (146.6 μmol AscAE/g dry extract). Methanolic and ethanolic extracts also showed Fe(II) chelating activity with EC50 0.37 mg mL-1 and 0.40 mg mL-1. The results indicate that burr parsley extracts rich in phenolic acids exhibit antioxidant, and antiradical activity and could be used as source of natural antioxidants.
