Sažetak
This work aimed to investigate intraspecific variation of Illex coindetii morphometric characters in the Adriatic Sea and study the relationship between body size and various beak lengths in order to provide predictive equations for further investigations regarding prey size reconstruction. A length-weight relationship of I. coindetii and description of pigmentation process of its beaks is also given. Overall, 249 female and 265 male specimens of I. coindetii were examined. The sex ratio didn’t differ statistically from the expected 1:1. The t-test indicated that only two body morphometric parameters, dorsal mantle length (DML) and fin length (FL), significantly differed between two sexes with both characters being larger in females. Results revealed a significant difference in beak morphology between males and females. High correlation coefficients for both beak length/ weight and beak length/ mantle length relationships were found for hood length (HL) indicating the usefulness of this character for biomass estimation studies. The relationship between lower rostral length (LRL) and body weight for combined sexes is given by the equation log BW = 0.522 + 2.71 log LRL, r2 = 0.876.
